5 Essential Zero Waste Products
The definition of zero waste varies, but essentially it means sending no trash to landfill. In order to do this, you need to stock up on some essential reusable products that will directly replace single-use products, making it so easy to cut down your own personal trash.
Here are our 5 highest selling reusable products.
Plastic toothbrushes are one of the major culprits in ocean pollution. Plastic exists forever in some shape or form, and therefore every single toothbrush ever made is still here on the planet somewhere. It will break up over time, eventually into micro plastics to be ingested by marine wildlife and humans. Bamboo toothbrushes are a great alternative to plastic. The ones we stock are sourced sustainably and feature nylon 4 bristles which are compostable. We also stock other biodegradable options made from corn starch.
Keep your reusable straw on you and you won't ever need a disposable plastic straw again when you're out and about. There are a variety of great options available now. We stock straws made from either sustainable bamboo or food grade stainless steel. They each have their own benefits depending on what style you would prefer, how many you need, and what material you prefer.
Beeswax food wraps are fantastic. They're designed to replace cling film, plastic food bags, and foil - all popular disposable items used to cover and wrap food and dishes and transport food from one place to another. Beeswax food wraps are handmade using sustainable and ethical materials - generally using organic cotton, jojoba oil and beeswax. They are compostable, leaving zero impact on the earth once disposed of. The beeswax is naturally antibacterial and you use your hands to warm the wrap and bend it to shape. They can last for a year or more and are easy to use and look after. To clean them simply wipe down with cold soapy water, rinse and leave to dry.
Much to the general consumer's disbelief when this first came to light, the majority of disposable coffee cups cannot be recycled due to the plastic lining inside the cup, and are destined for landfill. Thankfully some amazing reusable options are available, many of which are barista standard (they will fit into pretty much all coffee machines in cafes), and are so much nicer to drink out of than a disposable cup.
It's so easy to carry a drinking bottle and fill it up as you go, there really should be very little need for any of us to buy plastic water bottles for our every day needs. Not only are they one of the major culprits of ocean and worldwide pollution, but the water in them contains micro plastics! Single walled drinking bottles are fine for carrying cool water around. You can also choose an insulated option which generally will keep cold water cold for up to 24 hours and hot water hot for well over 12 hours.
Single use plastic bags are a catastrophe for the planet! Until recently there was no obvious way of recycling them either, yet we used them for everything. We don't really need to put our apples in a plastic bag yet we do because they're there for us to use and it's what we've got used to doing. We love the environmentally friendly alternatives that have come into market in recent years! For example the produce bags which can be used to buy and store fresh and dried produce so you dont need any plastic packaging or bags. They come in a variety of materials including cotton and rPet. If you haven't heard of it before, rPet is a fab material made out of recycled plastic bottles which can be woven into fabric. It's easy to keep clean, breathable, and can be recycled. Plus you're directly removing plastic waste from landfill by buying products made from this.
